Both the rod & stone feel & look substantial. I don't have the cartilage piercing, but I got the 38mm thinking to use it to connect my upper most to the lowest piercings on my ear lobe instead...and it works w/some pain & difficulty getting it on & off, as expected from the not-intended usage. I'd think it would look great if use as intended (on cartilage).
