I did not buy this for a 40th birthday. I have three sisters so I thought it would be a lovely four sisters gift. It’s very easy to discard the 40th birthday because the box which is lovely has a foam padding that you could just place the necklace in it also comes with a separate blank card, A polishing cloth and a small gift bag to put it in. It is lovely. The pearls are beautiful. The chain is thin but a nice box chain. It might be a little short for some I think the pearls look nice higher up, you could not switch out the chain because the pearls run through it, but you could add a chain extender to the back if you wanted it longer. For the price I am very pleased with this
