I had previously bought an alexandrite pendant (June birthstone) set in white gold that came with a "free" sterling silver 18" chain. The ring clasp on that chain was not working well straight out of the box. Also, sterling silver has to be cleaned and maintained even when working well. My husband and I were giving the necklace to a 15 year old for her birthday. (We're sort-of adopted grandparents. She's hispanic and the 15th birthday is a very big deal.) 15 year old girls and a high maintenance cheap chain with a defective clasp is not a good combo. So we splurged and got her this 18" , 14k white gold chain with a lobster claw clasp. It was a beauty! Even my husband made a remark about how shiny it was. I replaced the cheap chain with this and the entire necklace lit up. It highlighted the white gold of the gem setting perfectly. She absolutely loves the necklace and I don't think she's taken it off since we gave it to her. Beautiful!
