WHAT ARE RUNES?by Kittie Bernott in Blog

Runes are the symbols that make up the alphabets used to write Germanic languages for many centuries, before the Latin alphabet (which we still use today) rose in popularity.

Scholars call symbols in the Latin alphabet “letters” and the symbols in the Germanic alphabets “runes” to differentiate them for historical reasons, but letters and runes ultimately served the same purpose — they allowed a group of people to write down words that would otherwise only exist in oral tradition.

Runic alphabets were multi-functional; in addition to being phonetic symbols, meaning they represented the spoken sounds of Germanic language, they were also visual symbols of elements of the natural world that were important in Norse society.

Even though a Völva was responsible for acts of divination in Old Norse society, the runes were accessible to both men and women and were respected for their multi-faceted power. There is no direct historical documentation of runes used in divinatory practice but the appearance of runes on items like weapons, jewelry, talismans, and within Spell Staves shows evidence of their use in spiritual or ritual practices.

Runes from both the Elder Futhark and Younger Futhark are used extensively in modern Norse culture, and in popular culture as well. Though both alphabets can be used for divinatory purposes, the Elder Futhark continues to be the more popular choice, often for its direct connection to Odin and the Aesir. As a modern day Völva, I personally favor the Elder Futhark and use it for all my divination work and rune readings.

HOW TO USE RUNES

When translating runes it’s important to understand that meanings are not literal and tend to be metaphors. For example, drawing an Uruz (pronouciation “ooo-rooze”) which means Ox doesn’t necessarily refer to the animal, but might symbolize strength or endurance.

runes meanings

  • Z(divine protection,courage,independence)
  • A(Odin,inspiration,wisdom,divinity,communication)
  • U(inner strength,determination vitality)
  • H(change,new beginning,freedom)
  • N(energy,growth,wholeness)
  • S(warmth,positivity,success)

Runes

Sound: “w”, “v” Stands for: Joy Color: Pink (Blue) Casting meaning: This rune shows us the balance between all things even when in a chaotic world. It is also a rune of fellowship, common goals and well being to all things. If you come across this rune in a reading you can expect good news to come your way.

Sound: “oo” Stands for: Auroch (like a wild ox) Color: Orange (Dark Green) Casting meaning: Uruz is also a rune of power, but unlike Fehu, it’s a power that we can neither own nor control. In a casting it can mean that personal success is near. For charms and talismans use Uruz for its healing powers.

Sound: “f” Stands for: Cattle Color: Green (Brown) Casting meaning: Fehu is a rune of power and control. It represents new beginnings and “movable” wealth such as money and credit. It is a rune that gives us the power we need to obtain wealth as well as the power we need to hold on to it.

Sound: “h” Stands for: Hail, Hailstone Color: Blue (White) Casting meaning: Representing a hailstone we can expect time and situations to be constricting if Hagalaz turns up in a reading. But much like a hailstone will eventually turn to water, which flows smoothly, these situations and times will eventually flow smoothly for us.

These two necklaces are so pretty! Simple and feminine, a dainty and elegant way to wear my Mjolnir close to my heart. The Wunjo is a great addition when I need the extra boost of connection to the old gods. They're small and subtle enough that I don't get unwanted or hostile attention, and other heathens always compliment my Mjolnir when they see it. If you are debating buying this, I say DO IT!!! I have only taken it off to shower because I'm unsure if it will tarnish or lose it's shine, and after about a month of constant wear it is still very strong and the chain is holding up well!

This is so cute! I get compliments every time I wear it.I was getting frustrated looking for a mjolnir necklace and only finding really big heavy pendants. My only comlpaint is the chains are kind of cheap feeling and they get tangled badly when I wear the 2 necklaces together. I bought the clasp to hold the 2 necklaces together and it helps but they still get tangled a bit and I feel like the chains may break soon. Otherwise I love this little hammer and rune set and have purchased a second one, I'm thinking of getting several runes and wearing them all on a bracelet together.

Being a Norse Pagan and trying to find the wife a möjlnir that is more simple design was hard. She loved it. Just wish the chain was a little bit stronger but over all she loves it and hasn't taken it off yet
