cartouche

So what exactly is a cartouche?

A cartouche is the nameplate or seal that was used by ancient Egyptian royalty as a powerful amulet of protection for all eternity. The oval shape is encircled by a rope, tied in a knot at the bottom, and symbolized 'all that the sun encompasses'.

The earliest examples of cartouches date back to the Second Dynasty of Egypt, but their common usage started under Pharaoh Sneferu during the Fourth Dynasty. The ancient Egyptian word for cartouche was "shenu". Fun fact: When Napoleon was in Egypt in the 1800's he thought that the shen symbol looked like a bullet cartridge, and referred to them as 'cartouches' the french word for cartridges.

heiroglyphics

Hieroglyphs - one of the oldest languages

The hieroglyphic language dates back to 3000 BCE, and remained in use until 400 AD. It was a complex system of symbols, some of which represented sounds (phonetic) and others represented ideas. Of the many phonetic symbols, approximately 30 represented sounds close to English.

OUR STORY

D iscoveries Egyptian Imports is an adventure that began back in the summer of 1979, when I went to visit a college friend who was studying at University in Cairo. We traveled through Egypt, Syria, Jordan, and Turkey, purchasing handcrafts that we hoped to sell and pay for our trip. When we returned home, we set up booths at craft fairs, lugged suitcases full of trinkets into any kind of retail store that might be interested, and even took our chances street vending in New York City. It was great fun, and we had dreams of growing into a "real company" someday.

In the summer of 1980, with great assistance from family and friends, 'Discoveries – Ancient Arts' opened a store to the public on November 6, 1980, halfway down a cobblestone alley in Alexandria, Virginia. Since it was our intent to travel throughout the world to buy handcrafts, the name 'Discoveries' seemed to fit. And now, almost 40 years later, Discoveries Egyptian Imports has proven to be an adventure of a lifetime.

PHENOMENAL AND HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! I purchased two necklaces as best friend necklaces for my sister and I. The quality is amazing. I love the placement of the Heiroglyphics well as the links are completely closed so the pendants aren't likely at all to fall off!! Also the chains are the same (no separations between any links or clasps) and the chains are also high quality and strong. So recommended, wonderful quality, communication, service. My sister and I are so happy with our necklaces and mean so much to us as they are directly from and created in Cairo, EGYPT!! Now hopefully we can summon Brendan Fraser.....

It’s absolutely beautiful!

Cleaning this thing every few days is a chore, the words stand out nicely that I had put on it, but the background it’s on tarnishes like crazy literally after a few days I’m back trying to clean it so it doesn’t look dirty. I store this like I do all my silver and out of every piece I own this is the most complicated. I like the pendant just wish I had known I purchased another job rather than a gift for myself.
