I have been making jewelry since I was a child and have seen a lot of changes in that time. Of course metal prices fluctuate, but so do gemstones, along with quality and availability. For most of the time I have been making jewelry garnet has been pretty inexpensive and widely available. This past year I have seen prices soar, and less availability, but generally higher quality stone (as well as the availability of many colors, varieties of garnet). I ordered these just a couple of days before one of the annual gem shows that I go to which was a bit silly, but not a huge expense. In fact, I did not see a lot of garnet there but whayt I saw was higher quality and more expensive.This is about the lowest quality garnet I Have ever seen and surely the lowest quality I have ever bought. The beads are so dark I wasn't sure if they were black until I held them up to a high intensity light. When I di I saw that the material is mostly opaque, which I have not s3en much in garnet (though I have in more expensive material). Garnet has been going up in price, and while I am not sure there is anything I can properly compare it too, though I have numerous sources, most of what I see is higher quality, and correspondingly higher prices. Though I shop at wholesale shows I haven't seen garnet at $5-6/ strand in a while, at least not in this size. I do think that you get what you pay for with these. The quality is not great but they are also very inexpensive, really about the price of bulk pressed glass.If you have a specific project in mind, these may or may not work. They are darker than most garnet, partially opaque, and some of the transparent parts lean towards brown. For many who use these as filler beads that might be OK, but if you are planning one or more projects based on red garnet, these may or may not work for you. If you have something very specific in mind I suggest ordering one strand to check color/ transparancy before ordering a lot.

Gorgeous garnet beads. I purchased the 10mm--I think these stones would be best appreciated at this size or larger. Beautiful clarity but dense, it feels like you should be able to see through it and almost can.
