What is hydrothermal Gemstones

Hydrothermal gemstones are gemstones that are created in a laboratory using a hydrothermal process. This process involves growing crystals under high temperature and pressure conditions that mimic those found deep within the Earth's crust where natural gemstones are formed.

Hydrothermal gemstones benefit

  1. Availability: Hydrothermal gemstones are produced in a laboratory, which means they are not limited by the constraints of natural gemstone deposits. This makes them more readily available and can help to reduce the demand for mined gemstones, which can have a negative impact on the environment.
  2. Consistency: Hydrothermal gemstones are produced under controlled conditions, which means they can be produced in a consistent manner. This allows for the creation of gemstones of a specific size, shape, and color, which can be useful in jewelry making.
  3. Affordability: Hydrothermal gemstones are often less expensive than natural gemstones because they can be produced more quickly and in larger quantities.
  4. Quality: Hydrothermal gemstones have the same chemical and physical properties as natural gemstones, making them of high quality and ideal for use in jewelry making.
  5. Ethical considerations: The production of hydrothermal gemstones can be considered more ethical and sustainable than mining for natural gemstones, as it doesn't involve harmful mining practices or human exploitation.

How popular are hydrothermal gemstones

Hydrothermal gemstones have become increasingly popular over the past few decades. While natural gemstones still hold a significant share of the market, the demand for hydrothermal gemstones has grown due to their affordability and availability.

Hydrothermal gemstones are often used in mass-produced jewelry, such as fashion jewelry or costume jewelry, as well as in high-end jewelry where the focus is on the design rather than the value of the gemstone itself. Many jewelry designers also use hydrothermal gemstones as an alternative to natural gemstones, especially for larger stones, where the cost of natural gemstones can be prohibitive.

Biggest stone I now own. Not sure what to so with beautiful stone. I was thinking a ring, but it's way too big for that. I might be able to have it set into a pendant. Beautiful , very saturated blue topaz stone. It is clear and flawless. It is just so big though! I love it, and it is sure a collector stone!

I just love shine pretties, and this is a nice addition to my collection.

Last minute request to Santa for a “blue gem”, so didn’t have a ton of time to shop around. This was exactly what I was looking for, but for something that’s definitely made in mass quantity with machines using a low-cost material like acrylics, I feel like the price point could be a LOT lower. If I hadn’t been trying to make a Christmas dream come true, I definitely wouldn’t spend this much again. Happy with the item, for sure, but feel taken advantage of in terms of the price.

Andrea Richardson
It has obviously been dropped. Unprofessional.

This is an alright stone. It’s a bit smaller than I anticipated but that’s fine because I am sure the carat weighs what it says it does. The one thing that does bother me, however, is that it has scratches on it. I’m not sure how it was scratched or what in the world previously caused the scratches on it but it’s rather bothersome because the stone is quite nice otherwise.Pros:Pretty colorWeight is correctInexpensiveCons:Mine came with some scratches

I was wondering why a blue topaz this large was so cheap so I took it to a friend who is a gemologist of over 50 years and she ran multiple tests to be certain and it failed each test. It's too smooth- blue topaz will have some ridges and not feel super smooth. To the eye, you won't really notice but there are various tests and a good magnifying eyepiece is one of them. She looked with that and then under her microscope and told me it's definitely glass. She still moved on to the next test and said a real blue topaz is easily electrified and glass is an insulator where electricity very poorly moves thru it. So she ran her voltmeter thing on it and it failed that test, the electricity didn't run thru it.The next thing is she asked who this came from and I pulled up the Real-Gems page for her. We looked and this company sells things like rough emeralds, rubies, etc... People who bought those got them wet and the dyes used on the fake stones started to run. Real gems don't have color run when you get them wet like that! This company peddles fakes! These should be about half the price they are considering they are glass but I'm sure if they admitted they were glass, they'd still sell plenty because they're still beautiful! But beautiful in the sense of those fake diamond paperweights made of glass because this is glass...I've included pictures from this company's other listings to show the dyes running out of their fake gems. My guess is they put dyes on cheap things like quartz crystals and didn't expect people to get them wet.

So misleading. With the name real-gems, you would not realize that this was made in a lab. It is hidden at the very bottom as they go through all this stuff about it seeming real. Wy would you need gemologists for a lab created gemstone? I just called my husband who was about to put it in a necklace with real gemstone and got him to stop just in time. This should be more clearly marked as lab created, not have a name like real gems which implies that it is a genuine gemstone. So disappointed.
