W hat Are Mala Beads?
Buddhist prayer beads or malas are a traditional tool used to count the number of times a mantra is recited, breaths while meditating, counting prostrations, or the repetitions of a buddha's name. They are similar to other forms of prayer beads used in various world religions and therefore the term "Buddhist rosary" also appears.
Malas are used for keeping count while reciting, chanting, or mentally repeating a mantra or the name or names of a deity. This sādhanā (practice) is known in Sanskrit as japa. Malas are typically made with 18, 27, 54 or 108 beads.
How to Use Mala for Meditation?
The mala is traditionally held in the right hand and used in two ways -
- In one method, the mala is hanging between the thumb and the ring (third) finger. The middle (second) finger is used to rotate the mala by one bead towards oneself with each repetition of the mantra.
- In the other method, the mala is hanging on the middle finger, with the thumb used to rotate the mala just as explained - one bead at a time.
- Either way, the index finger is never used to touch the mala.
The practice begins at the summit bead (sumeru) and continues around the loop until the summit is reached again. The summit bead is never passed over. So if you plan to do more than 1 round, the mala is turned around to proceed again in the reverse direction
Whenever the mala is taken up, it automatically conditions the mind to the meditative state.

I love this bracelet!! I’m so happy with my purchase. I bought different colors & I’m happy with them all.It’s stretchy but has kept its shape well. I love the contrast of the different colored beads. I wear it almost daily.I think the size of the beads are perfect for me, my wrist is on the smaller side so having larger beads would be uncomfortable.Would make a lovely 🥰 gift.

They are beautiful as a necklace or bracelet but these are not functional for spiritual mantra recitation. The beads are too small and the cord is elastic so it’s just not practical. I’ll probably keep them because it is nice as jewelry but I will buy something else for my actual mala beads.

Some reviews mentioned that the colors are duller in person, but the Rhodochrosite color I ordered looks just as vibrant and beautiful in person as it does in the photos! True, the smaller beads size/spacers make this kind of impractical as a meditation tool, but since I specifically wanted to wear it as jewelry, this is a plus to me. I’ve wrapped it four times around my wrist and it’s comfortable—not too heavy, yet substantial. Thanks for the lovely mala!

well made, but does not look like the beautiful warm vibrant pictures. Not sure what it is, the beads are much smaller size than expected so not the look I thought, and the beads are not shiny which is alright, but the colors are a little disappointing. They're similar, but there's far less diversity in the tones in particular the lovely warm brown and almost yellow tones in the picture are missing. It's mostly the green with a tiny touch of yellow and brown. All around turns it into a much darker solid green. Seems very well made and comfortable. Wish the beads were sized more like the photo/ larger. It's pretty, it's just different than it looks on here.
